Custom Shopify App Development

Production-grade custom Shopify apps built with the real API — not workarounds.

Embedded admin apps, public app submissions, private apps for internal tooling, and Shopify CLI-based builds using Remix and the GraphQL Admin API. I build apps that pass Shopify's review and scale to real usage.

The problem

Where Shopify merchants get stuck

No app in the store does exactly what you need

App store apps are built for the median merchant. Your requirement is specific — a custom pricing engine, a B2B portal, a configurator, an internal admin tool. The app doesn't exist.

You're paying for three apps that don't talk to each other

Three subscriptions, three APIs, and a duct-tape integration that breaks monthly. A custom app consolidates this — one codebase, one bill, no integration gaps.

Your developer built something that failed Shopify's review

Shopify's app review process has specific requirements around API usage, rate limiting, session handling, and security. Missing any of them means rejection.

Webhook reliability is broken

Webhooks from Shopify are delivered at-least-once and can arrive out of order. An app that doesn't handle idempotency and retry logic will corrupt data in production.

What I build

Specific deliverables — not buzzwords

Embedded admin apps
  • Remix-based embedded apps using Shopify CLI
  • App Bridge 4 integration with session tokens
  • Admin API and GraphQL integration
  • Polaris design system or custom UI
  • App subscription billing via Shopify Billing API
Storefront-facing apps
  • Storefront API cart and product operations
  • Theme app extensions (blocks, sections)
  • App proxy for server-rendered content
  • Customer account UI extensions
Infrastructure & reliability
  • Webhook processing with idempotency and retry
  • PostgreSQL session storage (not cookie-based)
  • API rate limit handling and queuing
  • Shopify GDPR webhook compliance
  • Sentry error monitoring + alerting

How I work

A process built around no surprises

Discovery

Written scope. Not a verbal promise. Requirements, constraints, integration map, risk flags.

Architecture

Data models, API surface, Shopify feature selection, deployment strategy — before a line of code.

Build

Structured sprints with staging access throughout. You see working software weekly.

Launch

Cross-device testing, load testing, controlled launch, monitoring from day one.

FAQ

Common questions about Custom Shopify Apps

How long does it take to build a custom Shopify app?

A simple embedded app (admin UI, basic API integration) takes 4–6 weeks. A more complex app with billing, webhooks, storefront extensions, and third-party integrations typically takes 8–14 weeks. I scope this in writing before any work starts.

Will my app pass Shopify's public app review?

If you're planning to list the app publicly, I build to Shopify's Partner requirements from the start — API usage policies, rate limiting, session handling, GDPR compliance, and the Polaris design system where required. I've been through the review process multiple times.

Should I build a custom app or use an existing one?

If an app store solution covers 80%+ of your requirements, use it. Custom apps make sense when: you need a feature that doesn't exist, you want to consolidate multiple subscriptions, you need deep integration with your internal systems, or you're building a product to sell.

What tech stack do you use for Shopify apps?

The Shopify-recommended stack: Remix for the app framework, Shopify CLI for scaffolding and dev tooling, GraphQL Admin API, App Bridge 4 for embedded UI, PostgreSQL for session and data storage. This is the stack that Shopify actively maintains and supports.
